The Only One Who Can Satisfy the Human Heart is the One Who Made It
Hello Hello!! I pray you all have been doing well and have been staying safe during this pandemic.
Crazy ride, huh? It almost seems like anything that could happen in 2020, did happen! In times of such uncertainty, the only thing that we can be sure of is God’s sovereignty. He still reigns and rules, and holds everything in His hands.
In the midst of waiting for this uncertain time to pass, I have noticed that many (including myself), have become antsy, discouraged, and dissatisfied.
Many are waiting for life to “return to normal.” Many are waiting for the next best thing…a new job, a spouse or new relationship, a new home, or for their business to go in an upward direction. Many feel like all will be well once our hair is a certain way, our wardrobe gets to a certain point, or we lose a certain amount of weight.
In a nutshell, there is a serious longing and yearning in the hearts and minds of many that we believe can be satisfied with certain conditions or material possessions. But this is not unique to this season of life. We all have found ourselves in this place at one point or another in our lives.
Sometimes we think that all will be well once we get married, have a child, get a new job, or do what God has called us to do. It’s like we are always thinking that we will be at peace once we achieve this certain goal.
The truth is, there is a place in our hearts that will always have a deep longing and yearning for something more…something greater. And no matter what we do or what we accomplish, the only thing that can satisfy that longing and yearning in our hearts is the one who created it.
One of my favorite bible stories is the story about the Samaritan woman that Jesus met at the well. There are so many great spiritual lessons that can be pulled from this one story. We could talk all day about how Jesus looked beyond their cultural and racial differences and her unrighteous lifestyle and spoke to her heart in love (that may be a future blog post). One of the key things that intrigued me about this story is how he revealed to her that everything that she longed for could only be found in a true relationship with Him. This story can be found in John 4.
Just to recap the story a little, Jesus came to a town in Samaria named Sychar. He sat down by Jacob’s well, as he was tired from the journey. A Samaritan woman came to draw from the well, and Jesus asked her for a drink.
History tells us that Jews did not associate with the Samaritans because of cultural differences and religious beliefs. Therefore, the fact that Jesus not only talked to her but asked her for a drink took her by surprise. She asked him, “How can you ask me for a drink?” Jesus replied to her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.” (John 4:10)
The Samaritan woman asked where could she get this living water? Jesus replied, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will come in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” (John 4: 13-14.)
At that point, Jesus spoke to her about her current state. She was with a man that she was not married to and had 5 husbands in the past. She had gone from relationship to relationship, trying to fill a void. When Jesus spoke to her about her immoral state, she knew that Jesus was special (she called him a prophet), but she did not realize that He was the Messiah, the savior of the world, and the one who could save her. One thing is for sure. She was in earnest expectation of the Messiah, and she knew that when He came all things would be clear. (John 4:25).
Jesus revealed to her that He is the Messiah. He is the one that she has been waiting for. He is this one that her heart had been searching and longing for.
He was the only one that could quench that insatiable thirst that she had. She was trying to satisfy her heart by natural means, but she finally met the one who taught her what true satisfaction is.
She left her jar behind and went back into town and told everyone about the Messiah. She didn’t know a lot about him, but she knew that she had finally came in contact with what her heart had desperately been seeking for. To me, her jar was symbolic of everything natural that she had been trying to use to satisfy spiritual thirst.
We can move from house to house, from job to job, from friendship to friendship, reach all of our goals and accomplish everything that our hearts dream of. But our hearts will always feel empty unless we have a real relationship with the one who created them.
Prayer: Lord, satisfy us in the morning with your steadfast love, that we may rejoice and be glad all our days. Psalms 90:14.
